The Buff or Buff Orpington was developed by the William Cook family who lived in the Orpington area of Kent, England in the early 1900s. It was developed as a multipurpose bird, with the ability to lay good quantities of eggs along with having the size and feather color to make a good roasting duck. Some even claim that the buff colored feathers are easier to pluck than the white Pekin feathers.

Though the Buff breeds true (progeny have the same color as parents), they originated from a variety of breeds. W. Powell-Owen described this breeding program in 1918 "Runners were mated to Aylesburys, Runners to Rouens and Runners to Cayugas, and the progeny were crossed with one another until the buff plumage was secured." They entered the United States in 1908. Interestingly, they are the only poultry breed admitted in the American Standard of Perfection with their name as a color only. Orpington should have been used to describe the breed and Buff for the variety. They remain a very beautiful and popular breed.

February 24, 2021 | Wonderful ducks!

We love our buffies! Our girls all have distinct personalities and complement each other as a flock. They hatched around the very end of April. One started laying 9/17, the next a few days later, the smallest bird 10/15. They lay consistently and are still laying here in coastal NC in February. We would give them ten stars if we could.

January 7, 2022 | One of my favorites!

I love, love this breed! My girl is so sweet, alert, and intelligent. Out of five ducks of all different breeds, she is the only one smart enough to be an escape artist...but also is so sweet that she comes running to me when she sees me, and lets me pick her up and put her back in her pen. Even as a duckling, she was always watching and actively figuring things out. My most alert duck when it comes to watching for predators, an excellent forager, the first one to start laying (and she is laying so many eggs even in winter!), and is so interactive and friendly. I really just adore this girl and think this is a fantastic breed for anyone looking for laying ducks.

February 15, 2022 | Gorgeous Ducks

I think the Buff breed is beautiful, These girls grew so fast. I am ordering more and am enlarging my duck enclosure. The babies were very healthy when they arrived and have thrived. I am new to this, but I have enjoyed learning about them. They are incredibly entertaining, I absolutely love them.

March 6, 2022 | Our Sweet Little Buff

Deandra, our Buff duckling, is the most energetic of the new flock. She is on a race, so much more personality than I realized a duck could have. She is healthy and happy

May 12, 2022 | They're perfect!

This was the first time for us to order any kind of live animal through the mail, and I was so nervous. The staff at Metzer and my post office helped ease my nerves by explaining the process. This morning I got a call from the post office that the ducklings had arrived! All 8 were in great shape! I was very impressed with the quality of the ducks. It was nice that the male was marked with a little band as well. We were super impressed.

September 22, 2022 | Buff Orphington

My 4 girls arrived happy and healthy. I had them for 2 weeks, then my Silver Appleyard hen took them. She has raised them alongside her duckling and they are all wonderful. Very pleased , as always, with my purchase.

February 3, 2023 | Happy with this Breed

No issues, arrived healthy, had her about 7 months. We are able to pick her up easily. She has done fine with the colder Oregon winter weather.

March 6, 2023 | Ducklings Buffs

They are very curious and love being held. They are getting bigger every day.

April 20, 2023 | Happy Ducklings

Buff Ducklings are very healthy and ready to get out of the shipping box. Great looking ducklings

August 8, 2023 | extremely loud

got 2 females in october and they are very skittish, mean and loud and feed off of each other so beware! they are brave enough to fight off cats though. nothing wrong with the company- my review is the overall temperament of the breed

January 4, 2024 | OMG!!!

Our duckies just arrived and are so precious! They're 2 days old and came healthy, with a heat pack. They don't chirp as loudly as I expected, which is nice. They drink and eat just fine after teaching them where things are and how to do it. They already come to the edge of their enclosure and chirp when they want to be held. That surprised me, but is perfect. They seem to be pretty smart already. We all love Waffles, Cutie Pie, and Agatha (Aggie) so much! Metzer did a good job with notifications, details, and instructions on the babies. Definitely 10000... out of 10000... !!! I'll update in about a week or so. Thanks Metzer Farms!

March 30, 2024 | They are so worth it!

I ordered 2 Buff Ducks and they both came heathy and happy. I am so grateful! Now they are liven the live and will continue to be healthy and happy.

April 8, 2024 | Sweet little things

I ordered 6 buff females and 1 male, all arrived healthy and have flourished. They're a couple months old now and one of the females had a weak leg that was fixed with some TLC brewer's yeast, but I've otherwise had no issues with them at all. They'reb beautiful, friendly birds - don't like being held unless I'm feeding them - but they're the ideal duck.
