The Cobb 500 Cornish Cross has exceptional feed conversion and growth rate. This chicken will produce the best uniformity for processing with lean, tender breast meat. They can be processed as a Cornish game hen in as few as 4 weeks, a 7.4 lb fryer at 7 weeks, or a roaster at 10 weeks. Our chickens are vaccinated for Mareks and Coccidiosis and this is included in the price. Our chicks are always antibiotic free.

The Cornish Cross is valued for its rapid growth, great feed efficiency, tender meat, and broad breasts. The genetic traits of this bird have been in development and refined over many years to become the broiler breed of choice for commercial growers. These chickens will grow uniformly with minimal difference in weight. This is the standard chicken grown indoors on litter, but is also the most common variety for pasture and free range type systems.

Typically this bird is processed at 7 weeks, but many farmers choose to process at an earlier age and sell them as Cornish game hens. Some customers will demand large roasters and this can be accomplished by raising the birds to 10 weeks or older. Due to the tremendous amount of meat that can be economically produced by this bird, many pasture based farm systems use this chicken.

Commercial Meat and Egg Production Brochure

If you are looking for locally raised duck, goose, or chicken, visit our Local Meat Producers page. If you raise meat birds from Metzer Farms for sale in your area, we will add your farm to this list. Instructions for requesting your listing are also on the Local Meat Producers page.

Cornish Cross chicks should be started with a feed of 23% protein for days 1-20 after hatch. At days 21-30, protein should be decreased to 19% and then finally to 17% from day 31 to market. Some growers will restrict feed to slow down weight gain, allowing for the birds to further develop their heart and skeletal structure. Most commonly when restricting feed, if desired, is to keep the birds from eating for 12 hours overnight. The chickens must have access to water 24 hours per day.

Overall, the Cornish Cross is the most common meat chicken on the market. Due to its outstanding growth rate, feed efficiency, and broad breast this broiler will fit your needs whether you plan to grow them inside through the winter or outside in the summer.

February 6, 2021 | Great birds

These birds did great in brooders for 3 weeks then on pasture in chicken tractors in central Indiana in May/June. New feed in troughs once/day and grit available. Very low mortality, and processed well, livers and hearts healthy at processing, no mobility problems. Great tasting meat.

September 21, 2021 | Great Chicks

These are great chicks. The post office had a delay on the first delivery so many of the chicks didn't make it. Metzer replaced all that were lost. All of those were delivered alive. They are all growing very fast and are healthy. Metzer had the best prices of any hatchery, with shots included and free shipping. I will purchase any birds I need from them again. They also were amazing at communication, answered emails the same day.

November 26, 2021 | The only cornish cross I buy...

I've bought these birds for over two years, at least a dozen batches of 50 through all 4 seasons in Northern California's wet winters and parched dry summers. They arrive alive every time and I consistently get 90% to harvest, and harvests are 8-9 lbs dressed at 8-9 weeks, 6-7 lbs at 7 weeks. I pasture them and feed a 20% all the way to harvest. During the summer feed conversion gets down to 2.6lbs of feed per pound of bird - phenomenal.

March 17, 2022 | Great Birds for Raising in Movable Chicken Tractors

This is our third time ordering meat chickens from Metzer Farms. We specialize in regenerative agriculture. Once they have feathers, our meat chickens are raised up in chicken tractors that we move every day so that the birds have fresh grasses and bugs in addition to soaked grains to eat. We have outstanding results with these birds and we highly recommend Metzer Farms.

April 15, 2022 | Great people to work with

Received my order quickly! Any losses were reimbursed very quickly and very pleasant to speak to!

September 29, 2022 | So Far So Good

I had never ordered from this hatchery before but they had some cornish chicks available when I wanted them. I got an email on Monday that they had shipped and my post office called me at 6:15 AM on Wednesday that they had arrived. I ordered 30 chicks and 29 were alive when they arrived. One died a couple of days later but I still have 28 out of 30 which is an acceptable death loss rate. They are about half grown and seem to be growing like other cornish cross chicks I have raised in the past. I plan to process them in about 3 weeks.

December 30, 2022 | healthiest chicks

these chicks are awesome! I chose Metzer since they are semi-local by being raised in California. Chicks shipped on a Monday and arrived Tuesday at 6:30AM. Sent the exact amount of chicks, all healthy and thriving a week later, no losses. Compared to many other Cornish-cross I have purchased directly from feed stores, these chicks seem smarter and vigorous. Very happy and will continue my purchases through this hatchery from here on out! Thank you!

September 9, 2023 | Great Fast growers

These chickens are great! Ive ordered two sets of 10 and both time they have been incredibly healthy and grow super fast. We just got done harvesting the last 10 and got about 70lbs for dressed whole bird weight.

February 7, 2024 | Award winning tasty chickens - Thanks!

Please add award-winning to the title... we ordered these for our daughter's FFA chicken project and our freezer. In the local county fair, she won 1st and 3rd place, and in the regional state fair: 2nd and 5th - making the auction sale. A great learning experience for her and, after both fairs, we processed each batch and have been enjoying them ever since. Great for roasting, grilling, and our favorite - in the dutch oven. We'll keep ordering these and have recommended Metzer farms to other FFA families! Thanks!
