White Muscovy are excellent ducks for the average backyard flock. There is no breed of duck that does a better job of hatching and raising their young. They can also fly quite well which enables them to better escape predators. In addition, they are excellent foragers, eating larger amounts of grass than other types of domestic ducks. They are also calmer and quieter (no loud Quack like other female ducks) than other ducks.

Muscovy ducks are native to the swamps and rivers of Brazil. As they are a flying duck, they will often perch in trees though their nests are always on the ground. They are genetically different from all other breeds of domestic duck (which all originate from the wild Mallard duck). If you cross a Muscovy and any other domestic breed of duck, the progeny are infertile and cannot reproduce. See our article on Mule Ducks or Moulards.

Male Muscovy are almost twice the size of females as adults. By three weeks the two sexes are beginning to differentiate by size. We only offer straight run, unsexed Muscovy ducklings but it will be very easy to tell the males apart from the females as they grow. Muscovy, especially the males, are very strong and it is best to use gloves when handling them because of their sharp nails. They do not try to attack you as a rooster might, but you can be accidentally scratched.

Muscovy have been bred for excellent meat production. In France over 90% of the duck consumed is Muscovy. You will also find it in many of the nicer restaurants throughout the United States. It is leaner than Pekin meat and the male Muscovy will produce a very large breast that is almost beefy in taste and texture. The male Muscovy breast is often served rare.

Muscovy eggs take 35 days to hatch (versus 28 days for all other breeds of domestic ducks). Oftentimes they are difficult to hatch in an incubator but a broody Muscovy will do an excellent job of hatching and raising her young. If you remove the ducklings by 3-5 weeks, she will probably produce one or two more broods during the season. Muscovy normally start laying later in the spring than other ducks.

December 21, 2020 | Muscovy the quiet duck

I ordered 6 Muscovy and lucky me I have 3 males and 3 females. I love these guys. They all come running to the gate to greet me when I go out to feed. And they wag their tails like puppies. They are so quiet. And they have blue eyes.

March 4, 2021 | Review

All three Muscovy ducklings made it safe to NH in less than 48 hours and are doing awesome! Definitely think the grogel is a must when shipping day olds now. The packaging was good and there was a nice big heat pack in there to maintain the ducklings temp. They were checking out their new home and eating and drinking within a hour being here. Very alert but not skiddish either. Can't wait for my next order to come in next week.

May 23, 2022 | My Muscovy ducklings

They arrived alert and healthy. They started eating and drinking as soon as I got them home. I've had them a week now.

September 29, 2022 | Beefy birds

I was nervous after reading shipping was harder on muscovies than other breeds, but my order arrived with everyone alive and healthy. So healthy, in fact, I'd almost describe it as aggressively healthy! I've never seen birds so bouncy after a long trip. I ordered 4 muscovy ducks and was sent 5, which was a nice surprise. Even better, there turned out to be 4 hens and 1 male! The boy is massive, and at 12 weeks weighs as much as my 22 week old buff american geese. The girls make beautiful trilling noises, and they all come up, to me, wagging their tails and expecting treats - and nipping my feet if I have the audacity to approach them without a grasshopper or some peas! They are very calm, quier, friendly, and meaty birds, and I'd recommend anyone ordering them in a heartbeat.

October 9, 2022 | Good weight at 13 weeks

I just weighed some males and females of this line live. One male was just over 10lbs, the other 11lbs. The females were around 6lbs. This was with free range grass + 18% non GMO feed, occasional scratch grain and 20% feed the first 3 weeks. No health problems in the flock. I don't have an exact feed ratio as I have a mixed flock and didn't weigh feed, but I'd estimate around 25lbs of feed per bird, possibly less. Seems to be around 2 females to every 1 male.

November 17, 2023 | Super Heavy

My white Muscovy ducks hatched on 08/21/2023, and I weigh them at 11 weeks old 11/05/2023. The male is over 11.7 lbs, and females are over 6.5 lbs. all of them has black spot/black crest on top of the head with blue eyes. I really like it. I raise them as pets, not for meat. I feed them with Mazuri duckling feed and Grower crumble. I do not have the exactly feeding ratio. For me this is the gigantic size.
