Why Memphis? How Metzer Farms Ensures Faster, Safer Poultry Shipping Across the U.S.

Monday, September 29, 2025
At Metzer Farms, we’re always looking for ways to ensure our day-old birds arrive at your doorstep healthy, safe, and as quickly as possible. That’s why we opened our new hatchery in Memphis, Tennessee, a location designed for speed, safety, and growth.

Why Memphis? The Fedex World Hub Advantage

Memphis is home to the FedEx World Hub, one of the largest shipping and logistics centers in the world. Here’s a fun fact: the U.S. Postal Service contracts with FedEx to help transport live shipments. All live mail traveling more than 250 miles from its origin is routed through Memphis for sorting, while shipments under 250 miles usually travel by ground and skip Memphis altogether.

By hatching in Memphis, we cut down travel time, allowing our birds to fly nonstop to their final destination. This means faster delivery, less stress on the birds, and happier customers. In fact, this year, about 60% of our customers received their birds within 24 hours of hatch! That’s a huge improvement for live animal shipping.

Built for Growth and Innovation

“The decision to expand to Memphis was a strategic step for Metzer Farms,” said Marc Metzer. “We have access to the best transportation in the USA for our birds, a state-of-the-art hatchery that can easily triple its capacity, and a wonderful group of farmers with whom we can expand our production.”

Marc added, “With the Ducks Unlimited headquarters and the Peabody Ducks, Memphis is on its way to becoming the Duck Capital of the world!”

Faster, Safer Delivery for Our Customers

Our Tennessee hatchery allows us to work closely with the U.S. Postal Service and FedEx to provide overnight delivery of day-old ducklings and goslings across the nation. Whether your order is 2 ducklings or 5,000, the process is simple:

Chick Orders are handed off to USPS around 6:00 pm.

USPS delivers them to the Memphis FedEx airport hub at 10:00 pm.

FedEx flies the birds directly to your local airport overnight.

USPS delivers them to your local post office for a next-morning 6am pickup.

This system ensures your live ducklings and goslings spend as little time in transit as possible, giving them the best start in life.

“We’re excited to be in Memphis and provide overnight delivery of ducklings and goslings to people across the country,” said Metzer Farms owner John Metzer. “We’re providing a service that no one else can match.”

Memphis: The Future Duck Capital

Memphis is already famous for its ducks, from the historic Peabody Hotel duck march to being home to Ducks Unlimited. With our new hatchery, Metzer Farms is proud to contribute to making Memphis the Duck Capital of the world while providing faster, safer delivery of day-old ducks and geese to customers nationwide.

When it comes to raising healthy, happy ducklings and goslings, every hour counts, and our Memphis hatchery ensures your birds get the best start possible.
