The Magpie is originally from Britain and was first bred after World War 1 but their exact ancestry is not entirely known. Breeding documentation dates back to the 1920’s, and it has been said that their ancestry may have included the Indian Runner. Magpies were first exported to the United States in 1963. Today Magpies are commonly raised for showing although they were originally bred as a commercial utility bird for eggs and meat as their egg production is high and their breast feathers are white so the carcass plucks clean.

Magpies make a great addition to any yard with their black and white splash of color, their quiet nature, and their calm demeanor.

Gary G. | Awesome.

This is my first time with ducks. I ordered 2 females for backyard pets. They arrived very healthy. They arrived on September 20,2023. These girls are very smart and fairly quiet, unless you're slacking on treat time and they let you know. My girls like routines. They understand their names come when called. If I ever order again it will be from you.

Ellen R. | Great Pet Duck

I recently ordered 2 female in December along with Other breeds. I recently lost one (unknown death) but the other female is the sweetest girl. She is very relax, likes to be around people and held. I wish the other female made it because her personality was very sweet and I love this breed. I would recommend the magpies to everyone! They are a great breed!

Jaimee F. | Such amazing pets and layers

2 of the 4 ducks we ordered from Metzer are Magpies. They are the sweetest ducks. One started laying at 4 months and the other a few weeks after. They have great production and one of them lays blue eggs which I love sooo much!! I just ordered 3 more Magpies.

Tzivya C H. | I like my Magpies

I order 2 magpies together with 5 other ducks in September 2023. All the ducks are healthy. 1 magpie looks like a magpie, white with black back and head with orange bill. The other has a lot of black, black bill, looks like a black swedish. They are very pretty birds, the black feathers have a blue/green tint. 1 of my magpies had angel wing, the only duck with this issue from the 7 ducks I got. I taped up the hanging flight feathers early, and the duck's wings are fine now. 1 of the magpies is pretty aggressive for a duck, she'll chase anything that gets too close to the flock, people, cats, with her neck down. I am very glad Metzer decided to start selling this breed right when I decided to buy a mixed flock. Thank you.

Jennifer O. | Beautful!

Such a nice duck! She has a quieter quack than my other ducks, almost a chirp. Her markings are beautiful.

Jennifer L. | Pretty

Very pretty! Were a slower growing breed for me, but quite polite

LAURIE B. | Squeaky Maggie

I got my first Magpie August 2023, along with 4 other ducklings. Maggie is the sweetest/calmest of all, and rarely quacks. She makes a funny squeaky sound when all the others quack. The next time I get ducklings, I will definitely get more Magpies.

Shasta H. | Great color/pattern

I ordered 6 Magpies and at least 4 of them look like a good starting point colorwise for my breeders. Over all I'm pretty happy with them, very cute and healthy.

Walter j M. | Thank you for the happy healthy ducks

I got 4 males in July and they are all happy and healthy most of the time they just hang out unless you have treats then they are running around but mostly laid back even when the dogs are by them witch the dogs played mom and dad to them checking on them all day and night probably will be ordering females next

Ashley A. | Stunning!

While I have a soft spot for silver ducks, magpie might be the cutest ducklings out there. Arrived very happy and healthy in super speedy fashion!

Krystal H. | Stunning

There is a HUGE difference in my babies recieved from metzer in comparison to many other big named locations in the best ways. I will never get another duck from anywhere else. Their disposition, their colors, their personalities, the helpfulness and excellent communication from the staff. So many things. I've never had a more positive experience or been more in love with my new additions.

Kevin S. | Seems she will be a good mother.

I bought a Magpie and a Swedish in September. In October I bought 4 more ducklings. The Magpie is 8 weeks old now and the ducklings are 3 weeks old. The Magpie is like a mother to them, and they are always near her. I believe she has good mothering instincts.
