Duck, Goose & Chicken Hatchery

 Hatching Into Summer!

Hatching Into Summer!

We’re excited to share that we’ll be attending The Homestead Festival as vendors this year! Join us June 6–7, 2025, in Columbia, Tennessee, at Hardison Mill for two full days of community, learning, and fun. This amazing event brings together over 200 vendors, hands-on demonstrations, and nationally recognized speakers covering everything from raising livestock and gardening to self-sufficiency and regenerative living. There’s also live music each evening, tons of great food, and a welcoming crowd of like-minded folks.

Tickets are sold out but stop by booth #107 if you'll be attending to say hello! We’ll be there all weekend sharing what we do, chatting all things poultry, and connecting with the homesteading community. We are so excited to meet everyone!

Looking for a duck that’s both elegant and practical? Meet the Silver Runner! Silver Runners are different from other Runner variations in color. They are characterized by their white, very light gray feathering and dark bill. With their upright, penguin-like posture and silvery-gray plumage, these ducks are as eye-catching as they are hardworking. They are part of the Indian Runner family which is known for their incredible egg-laying ability (up to 300 eggs per year!) and energetic foraging habits.

Silver Runners are lightweight, flightless, and love to roam, making them excellent for pest control in gardens and flower fields. Despite their constant motion, they’re relatively quiet and can become quite friendly with regular handling. If you’re after a duck that’s easy on space, full of personality, and a reliable egg-layer, the Silver Runner is a fantastic choice!

We were lucky enough to have Dr. McCrea visit the Memphis hatchery to research different egg exteriors. She states, "It is important for small flock and backyard poultry owners to know what they are getting when they are trying to decide on one breed of duck over another.  We all love the eggs from our flocks and want to select the perfect breeds that are pretty, productive, and lay the eggs that feed our families. I am looking at different exterior egg parameters for heritage duck breeds to see how they change as the hens age." As you can see below, we had the privilege of watching her work her magic! Keep an eye out for a new and exciting blog about the results.

We get this question all the time: "Which duck breed should I get?"

The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Some people are looking for top-notch egg layers. Others want colorful plumage that pops in the backyard. And many are simply looking for calm, friendly ducks to enjoy around their property.

Everyone’s flock goals are different, and that’s what makes duck keeping so fun!

To help you decide, we created the Metzer Farms Duck Decision Tree along with a comparison chart...a quick and easy way to discover which duck breed fits your lifestyle best. Let us know which breed you land on!
