The Saxony duck is a striking and resilient breed with roots in Germany in the 1930s. It was developed by Albert Franz, who set out to create the ideal dual-purpose duck by crossing Pekin, Rouen, Buff, and Blue Pomeranian breeds. The result was a large, well-balanced bird known for both meat quality and visual appeal, including a light-colored undercoat that produces a cleaner, more attractive carcass.
The breed’s history is closely tied to Franz’s perseverance. During World War II, he was captured and held in a prisoner-of-war camp, and his carefully developed flock was lost. After returning home, he began the difficult process of rebuilding the breed from the ground up. Thanks to his dedication, the Saxony duck was successfully restored and has since become a recognized and valued breed.
Today, Saxony ducks are among the largest domestic breeds, second only to the Pekin. They are known for their calm, gentle nature and are easy to handle, making them a great fit for both new and experienced duck keepers. Despite their size, they are active foragers and do well in free-range settings. With their combination of beauty, productivity, and temperament, Saxonies continue to grow in popularity for backyard flocks and exhibition alike.
