Summer, Sunshine, and Silver Swedish ☀️🩶Metzer Farms June 2026 Newsletter
Long summer days and brand new ducklings make June one of our favorite times of year. We’re celebrating the arrival of our Silver Swedish ducks while sharing flock inspiration, seasonal favorites, and more for your summer setup.
The wait is over… Silver Swedish ducks are now available for a limited time. With their calm personalities, great foraging skills, and eye-catching coloring, it’s easy to see why this breed has been so highly requested.
The Silver Swedish duck is a calm, friendly, and hardy breed admired for its striking appearance and easygoing nature. Medium in size, hens average about 6.5 pounds while drakes reach around 8 pounds, making them a solid dual-purpose breed for both eggs and meat. They typically lay 120 to 180 large white or lightly tinted eggs each year and are excellent foragers, thriving in free-range settings. Known for their cold tolerance and gentle temperament, Silver Swedish ducks are a beautiful and practical addition to any backyard or small farm, though they remain less common than many other domestic breeds, adding a touch of rarity to their appeal.
Longer days and warmer weather are here! ☀️ Keep your flock cool, comfortable, and thriving this summer with these simple warm weather tips.
Keep water cool and clean💧
Refresh water often during hot days so your ducks and geese can stay hydrated and comfortable.
Provide plenty of shade⛱️
Trees, tarps, shelters, and covered runs all help your flock escape the summer heat.
Add electrolytes during heat waves🌞
A little extra support in their water can help birds recover from high temperatures and stay hydrated.
Serve cool summer treats🍉
Frozen peas, chopped watermelon, lettuce, and cucumbers are great warm weather snacks.
Make sure they can splash🌊
Ducks love using kiddie pools, tubs, and ponds to cool off during the hottest parts of the day.
Watch for signs of overheating🔥
Panting, drooping wings, or lethargy can mean your birds need to cool down immediately.
Keep predators in mind 🦝
Summer nights mean more predator activity, so double check fencing and secure housing before dark.
From cooling treats to shade and hydration tips, our blog below covers simple ways to help your flock stay safe and comfortable when temperatures rise.
Hot weather can be tough on ducks and geese, especially during the peak of summer. Our VitaMetz Waterfowl Boost helps support hydration and recovery with electrolytes, vitamins, probiotics, and niacin designed specifically for waterfowl. Keep a bag on hand for those times your flock could use a boost, whether that's after shipping, during molting, or throughout seasonal changes!
